Slim PrincessThe Festival Committee has been working with The Carson and Colorado Railway, to arrange, for early arrivals, a Thursday afternoon tour of the restored "Slim Princess’ and its new home in the recently constructed Larry Peckham Engine House at the Eastern California Museum.

The Slim Princess had quite a work history. The narrow-gauge engine, which was built in 1911, came to the Owens Valley in 1928 and was operated by Southern Pacific, which had taken over the original Carson & Colorado route from Keeler to Nevada. In later years, the route was shortened to just Keeler to Laws. The steam locomotive was replaced by a diesel electric engine in 1955.

The move to the museum grounds represents one of the final steps in the successful effort to restore the engine to fully operating condition. The non-profit Carson and Colorado group has spent the last five years working to get the locomotive running. After firing it up late last year, the group obtained all the relevant state and federal permits to operate the engine. The tour will include a presentation on the Slim Princess restoration, access to the Eastern California Museum and Engine House as well as a short ride on newly laid tenth of a mile track. Caravan will leave the museum parking lot at 12:30 PM and return approximately 3:30 PM.

About your Tour Guide:

Dave Mull  is a "Inyo County" original. Born in Lone Pine Hospital in 1958 and raised in Independence he went through k-12 in the Owens Valley Unified school disctrict. Dave has worked in the auto parts business for 42 years and owned the Napa Auto Parts of Lone Pine for the past 25 years. Married to Betty, they have a daughter , Casandra, and two grand-daughters Marissa & Laura. Dave and Betty still live in the family house his folks bought in 1963. He enjoys old stuff - espeically motrocycles and trucks.

An interest in Trains from a young age, Dave had watched the Locomotive (Slim Princess) on display outdoors in Independence's, Dehy Park, slowly deteriorate.  His interest became more when in about 1996 a gentleman came into the store with a giant grease fitting and said "I need a tool to grease this"! What in the heck is that off he asked? "The locomotive in the park!"  That was the begining of  a ride that ultimately brought Dave and numerous friends and associates together to pool their resources, contacts and thousands of volunteer hours into putting the Slim Princess back on track and leading to her new home at the Eastern California Museum.
