The entire journey is the longest tour we have offered running from 12:30 to approximately 5 on Friday and Saturday afternoons. It is a real movie and history adventure and the trip is safe but not for the faint of heart. You leave Lone Pine and travel out to Cerro Gordo Road and turn up towards the mountains. It is the same road that in the 1870’s millions of dollars of bullion came down on its way to a backwater Spanish settlement that would grow to be the mighty metropolis of Los Angeles. You will travel past the location of the cave set built three years ago for Iron Man, past the location of Steve McQueen’s home in Nevada Smith up to the historic mining camp. There owner and raconteur Mike Patterson will tell you stories of life in this rugged western town where for three years there was a murder almost everyday, or so the story goes.
You will see the museum, some of the houses, the American Hotel, which still accommodates visitors and end up at the movie house, CERRO GORDO SILVER SCREEN made possible by Lauren Bon and the Metabolic Studio. You will see Nevada Smith, and after this rare opportunity, return to Lone Pine for evening events.
Travel will be by four-wheel drive. If you cannot bring one to the Festival, every effort will be made to connect you with someone who will be on the tour and have seats in their vehicle. The tour is being led by Hollywood Grip Page Williams who will be bringing her jeep for the ride. Contact the ticket Office if you will need a ride.
The weather can be unpredictable at that altitude. It could be warm, or it could be nippy so bring appropriate clothing and walking shoes. You will be standing and walking in the real Old West!
