July 25, 2002: Riding Romance made
in 1926 has been identified as our "newest" film and has
been added to the official list. Packy Smith, film coordinator for
the festival, found a lobby card that clearly places at least one
scene of the film in the Alabama's. It also demonstrates that cowboys
did more than always just kiss their horses before the fade-out.
We assume that is female star Marjorie Bonner. The film also had
Arthur Morrison in it. Directing this Anchor production is J.P.
McGowan. The screen play was by G.A. Durlam Larry Langman in his
excellent book GUIDE TO SILENT WESTERNS states, "Al Hoxie portrays
an overworked hero in this action drama. He saves a ranch belonging
to the heroine, stops the villain from marrying the ranch owner
and rescues her brother from false charges of cattle rustling."
Now, have we ever heard a similar plot before? Thanks Packy for
finding this. There's nothing we enjoy more than adding a film to
our list. Now if we can only find an existing copy of the film.
