HISTORICAL ARTICLE FOLLOWS LONE PINE SHERIFFS’ MURDERS IN 1878-79 TO THE BEGINNING OF FILMING FORTY YEARS LATER

May 10, 2002:   If you are interested in the link between real Lone Pine history and the many cowboy films made here, go to the June 2002 feature in Wild West magazine entitled “Gunfighters and Lawmen.” Allen P. Bristow writes about the murders of two very popular Lone Pine Sheriffs: Tom Passmore murdered in 1878 and William L. Moore in 1879. Bristow ends the article by writing: “Roaring gunfire broke the majestic desert calm again, however, in the 1920’s when Hollywood discovered the Alabama Hills just west of Lone Pine.” He concludes: “The motion picture industry became an economic bonanza for Lone Pine as the camera ground out a mythical history of the west.” Undoubtedly, comparing the mythical with the historical west will be an on going project for our Museum.Wild West has a website located at www.TheHistoryNet.com
