The Role of Westerns in Shaping the American Experience
Feb. 27, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

American movie audiences embraced the Western genre in the 20th century. Featuring strong heroes in heart-stopping action on horseback, amid magnificent, rugged landscapes, Westerns influenced the behavior and even the ideology of a nation. Their gripping stories were principled tales in which good always triumphed over evil.

Just how these stories shaped the American lifestyle will be explored at this year’s Lone Pine Film Festival via screenings, presentations and panel discussions. The festival will be held Oct. 6 through 8.

TCM’s Ben Mankiewicz returns this year to host our Saturday evening keynote program featuring Scott Eyman, author of definitive biographies of John Ford and John Wayne. Eyman’s new book explores the 50-year friendship between Henry Fonda and James Stewart, along with a screening of their film The Cheyenne Social Club.

Each of these iconic heroes modeled the American ideal on the big and small screen. During the mid-century there were more than 30 hours of television programming that featured Westerns, including Gunsmoke, Rifleman, Rawhide, Have Gun Will Travel and Bonanza. Superstar characters like Hopalong Cassidy, The Lone Ranger and Roy Rogers didn’t just fill the dreams of the nation’s youth – the entire TV panoply generated millions of dollars in merchandising revenue.

True West Editor Bob Boze Bell; Paul Andre Hutton, author of Apache Wars; and John Lagellier, author of Fighting for Uncle Sam: Buffalo Soldiers in the Frontier Army, will explore the “reel” versus “real” stories of the American Indian Wars through screenings and panel discussions.

A further highlight this year will be a tribute to Robert Mitchum, in honor of his 100th birthday. Following a screening of his first starring role in Nevada, Western producer & historian Rob Word will interview Mitchum’s daughter, Petrine.
